Getting started

Insurance and cost

Most families in California pay very little out of pocket for ABA. Here is how the funding actually works, and what we do on your behalf.

If you have private insurance

A California law called SB 946, in force since July 2012, requires state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary behavioral health treatment, including ABA, for people with autism.

"State-regulated" is the part that matters. Some large-employer plans fall under federal law instead and are not covered by SB 946. We check which kind yours is. You do not have to work that out.

New for 2026: for plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, an insurer cannot make someone who already has a diagnosis go through a new one just to keep their treatment covered.

If you have Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal is excluded from SB 946, but that does not mean you are worse off. Children on Medi-Cal are covered by a federal rule called EPSDT, which requires medically necessary services, including behavioral health treatment, to be covered.

In practice that is often stronger protection than many private plans give.

If you work with Inland Regional Center

Inland Regional Center serves Riverside and San Bernardino counties and arranges services for people with developmental disabilities. For many Inland Empire families it is the main route.

If you already have a service coordinator, give us their name and we will coordinate with them directly.

What we will tell you, and when

  • What your plan covers and how many hours it authorised, before we start.
  • Any copay or deductible, in dollars, not percentages.
  • If your plan denies authorisation, we tell you that day and explain the appeal.
  • If we cannot bill your plan at all, you hear it on the first call, not after three visits.

Let us check for you

Give us your insurance card and we will find out what is covered. It costs you nothing and takes a few days.
